Noel Gyger - WEEKLY FISHING REPORT dated February 22 – March 1, 2009

Dear Fishing Friends:

SUMMARY: It has been cold at the beginning of the week but is finally warming up for the weekend. Both the upper and lower Kalum and lower Zymoetz (Copper) Rivers are open to Steelhead fishing. The Kalum River opens up to guiding on March 15th. There are still a few spots open. I have heard the Steelhead fishing is very good. I hear a rumour spring is on its way!

February 25, 2009 One 'New' podcast is posted on Podcast

The category for this show is: Meet the 'best' river fishing guide. The guide today is Ron Wakita. The show starts off with a short video clip (55 seconds) of Ron assisting his guiding client Carl Heinz to land a BIG Chinook (King) Salmon on the Kitimat River in July. The clip ends with the photo above of Ron, the BIG Chinook, Carl Heinz, Julie (Ron's daughter) and me. The podcast continues with an audio interview. Plays for 13:19 in Quick Time

LIST OF “New” ITEMS POSTED ON THE WEBSITE THIS WEEK:

One New item posted on 'Conservation' March 1/09
One New podcast re Meet the 'best' River Fishing Guide February 25/09
One New scenic photo posted on 'Scenic Photos' February 23/09

NOW BOOKING FOR 2009 Let me know if I can be of service to book you with the 'best' fishing guide and/or fishing lodges for both river and ocean. There are NO extra charges to book through me, just a lot of free information and advice from a person with years and years of fishing and fish guiding experience. It is like hiring two guides for the price of one. I will promptly answer your questions and concerns. Cast here http://noelgyger.ca/special-guided.htm to read more of what I have to offer.

BOOK EARLY and save money! The Canadian Dollar is low right now. Which way will the Canadian Dollar and the exchange rates go? The answer is no one knows. The Canadian Dollar is low at this time (as of today, Feb 15) A typical Weekly Lodge Package for 7 days/6 nights/5 days of guided fishing will cost $3500 Canadian Dollars in 2009. With the current exchange rate it will now cost $2751.36 in United States Dollars. A savings of $748.64 (most so far this year) I would suggest you BOOK NOW before exchange rates go the other way. Cast here for current money conversion rates. Contact me anytime for package details.

Many people book three trips per year to our area; one trip in the spring (March-April-May), one trip in the summer (June-July-August) and one trip in the fall (September-October-November). They love having the same guide but fishing for different fish in different areas.

Be sure to check out my website at www.noelgyger.ca for news bulletins, mid week fishing updates, conservation, my history, quality waters strategy, special guided fishing trips, video clips, scenic river photos, wildlife photos and others, comments from past guests, informational articles, archived fishing reports from 1996 through 2002 and a sportfishing market place. I hope it meets with your entire satisfaction.

FISHING GUIDE REPORTS FOR THIS WEEK ARE FROM:

Ron Wakita
Gill McKean

CURRENT REPORT and summary for Skeena and Tributaries:

TYPE OF FISH CAUGHT: Steelhead and Trout for river. Salmon, Halibut, Bottom Fish and Dungeness Crab for ocean.

Thank you for using barbless hooks.

FISHING THIS WEEK: - FAIR

LARGEST FISH OF THE WEEK: Specie: Angler: Where: (none reported this week)

WEATHER: Periods of snow and blowing snow. Amount 2 to 4 cm. Windy. High minus 1. Sunrise 7:23 AM Sunset 6:10 PM. Today’s yearly average temperatures: Maximum 4 degrees. Minimum -3 degrees.

WEATHER REPORTS VIA TELEPHONE: Environment Canada taped messages constantly updated, giving current conditions and three-day forecasts. Terrace 250-635-4192 Kitimat 250-632-7864 Prince Rupert 250-627-1155 Smithers 250-847-1958.

SKEENA RIVER: Is in good shape, low and clean but still frozen over in spots. Be very careful walking on those ice shelves. The spots that are open can have some drifting ice. Should be a few Steelhead and Trout one can catch.

KALUM RIVER: Is in good shape. Good numbers of Steelhead are in the river now. Fishing for them with fly or spin tackle works well. The water is extremely low and the fish are easily spooked. Walking around is getting a little easier as a lot of the snow has melted. The boat ramps are getting easier to access.

This is a Classified River year round and can be guided from March 15 through October 15 only. The Steelhead record is 32-pounds. To see a photo of this fish cast to: http://noelgyger.ca/records/Record003.jpg The angler is Dennis Therrien.

ZYMOETZ (COPPER) RIVER: Is fishing well for Steelhead right now. The upper section is closed to angling as of December 31 but the lower section below the first canyon will stay open for the winter Steelheaders to enjoy.

Fishing Report from: Ron Wakita of Reliable Guide and Charters.

KITIMAT RIVER: For most of the week we have had clear days with blue skies. We are still receiving cold winter temperatures but anglers have been able to get out and fish for trout on the Kitimat River and her tributaries. Trout fishing has been productive for Jody Dennill, a local hardcore trout fisherman. He said 'I have been catching quite a few on a fly'. Ariel Kuppers, who works in our tackle store, was talking to another Fly fisherman who said he was hooking most of his trout on minnow patterns. He also said that he has been doing really good fishing in Hirsch Creek.

Other trout anglers have been using dew worms as their lure of choice. Worms are usually the most productive lure for trout on the Kitimat River.

We just received a pretty good snowfall last night and it still snowing so hopefully it won't continue for too much longer.

DOUGLAS CHANNEL: Wes Owens of Golden Adventures was out in the Kitimat Harbour fishing for Winter Chinook earlier in the week and although he didn't catch any he watched a boat in front of him land two nice chinook. Wes estimated the fish to be 10 to 12-pounds which are a typical size for these feeder chinook although we have recorded winter chinook over thirty pounds in the past.

I spoke to another boater in our tackle store who said that he lost a pretty good size chinook because his leader broke. He admitted that he had not checked his leaders before he put them out. After his mishap he retied his leaders but was not able to attract another fish during the rest of the trip. The important lesson to be learned is to always check your line, leaders and tackle before you fish with them.

Fishing Report from: Gill McKean of Westcoast Fishing adventures

Hi Noel, Pierce Clegg and I were out scouting for some fresh fish it is still just a little cold.

Here’s what we were up to this week just out sniffing around for some fresh steelies. They must be still eating and growing in the Ocean we never had a touch. Just on the edge the weather will break and they will make a run for it, I can’t wait to swing my fly through a perfect run and feel that tug and the line peel off. It has been a long winter and I am ready for spring!

Regarding the fish guiding, there are only a few spots open for the best steelheading on earth!

The spring steelhead season offers everything the summer-run does without the crowds or the gill net fishing fleet intercepting our fish. The fish are bright chrome and only migrate short distances on beautiful coastal rivers. They are every bit as aggressive as the summer-run and carry more weight as they have not swum 300 miles or more.

If you have any questions please contact Noel and he will hook you up with a guide that knows the unclassified waters in Region 6 as there are more unclassified rivers than classified. Wouldn’t you like to fish something new? Adventure is what drives us to fish. Gill McKean

AREA RIVER RECORDS: Chinook Salmon: Skeena River, 92.5-pounds; Kalum River, 85-pounds; Kitimat River, 74-pounds; Steelhead: Skeena River, 45-pounds; Coho Salmon: Skeena River, 27-pounds.

Noel Gyger - WEEKLY FISHING REPORT dated February 1 – February 8, 2009

Dear Fishing Friends:

SUMMARY: Winter still has a grip on us although the temperatures are getting a little warmer. Both the upper and lower Kalum and lower Zymoetz (Copper) Rivers are open to Steelhead fishing. I have heard the ice fishing in our local lakes is pretty good also. I think more and more fisher people with “cabin fever” are thinking about getting out and wetting a line for some late winter Steelhead, weather permitting, of course.

A couple of my friends and I wanted to fish on Saturday but the weather turned bad, with light rain and nasty winds gusting to around 90km per hour. Maybe we will try again on Monday.

PODCAST update: There are “two” ways you can be notified when I post a New podcast:

KITIMAT RIVER: The keener anglers in the area continue to fish when the weather permits but the hardcore are fishing even when the winter weather is extreme. In the northwest we can receive snow, ice rain, high winds and sunny periods all in the same day. We had a bunch of these hardcore types gearing up with dew worms for the weekend. Early this week we had a fair amount of rain which dirtied up the river a bit but the river is dropping and may clean up for the weekend. We can always dress for the weather conditions but there is little we can do if the river is dirty. Stay tuned as I will report this weekend's results in next weeks report.

DOUGLAS CHANNEL: Similar to the situation on the Kitimat River where there are trout to be caught if and when weather and conditions will allow, the Douglas Channel has winter Chinook to be caught if and when boaters are able can get out to. The number one consideration for the Salt water anglers is the wind. We have experienced some strong winds which has reduced fishing opportunities this week. The other issue of the Kitimat harbour fishery has been the dirty water produced by the Kitimat River. With the Kitimat River dropping and calmer winds many of the keener boaters are anxious to get out.

Our guiding company, Reliable Guide and Charters is starting to receive numerous enquiries for fishing trips on the Kitimat River and the Douglas Channel.

We would be pleased to answer any enquiries about fishing in our area. Anglers interested in fishing the Kitimat River on their own are welcome to contact us at our tackle store, City Centre Hardware and Sporting Goods in Kitimat. Any anglers wishing to book guided Drift boat trips on the Kitimat or Salt water charters on the Douglas Channel please contact Noel.

AREA RIVER RECORDS: Chinook Salmon: Skeena River, 92.5-pounds; Kalum River, 85-pounds; Kitimat River, 74-pounds; Steelhead: Skeena River, 45-pounds; Coho Salmon: Skeena River, 27-pounds.

Noel Gyger - WEEKLY FISHING REPORT dated January 25 – February 1, 2009

Dear Fishing Friends:

SUMMARY: Winter still has a grip on us although the temperatures are getting warmer. It is still too cold for me but the young guys are getting out and catching lots of fish I have been told. Both the upper and lower Kalum and lower Zymoetz (Copper) Rivers are open to Steelhead fishing. I have heard the ice fishing in our local lakes is pretty good also.

VIDEO CLIPS – I posted one New clip on January 30, 2009

Chad Black, Rob Vodola and I were fishing for Steelhead on the Kalum River last fall and Rob landed this very bright doe on his centre pin float fishing rod. To watch the clip right away cast to this link: Video Clip 0064 The clip is titled “Steelhead with sea lice”

To watch podcasts cast to: http://www.noelgyger.ca/podcast.htm

I promised I would let you know at the end of January which “Photo of the Week” from 2008 got the most votes. And the winner is:

August 10, 2008. Greg Buck and his son Josh hold up this huge Skeena River 70-pound Chinook (King) Salmon before releasing it. This once-in-a-lifetime giant was landed by Josh...yes...all by himself. Full Report

Thanks to all who took the time to send me their votes.

CURRENT REPORT and summary for Skeena and Tributaries:

TYPE OF FISH CAUGHT: Steelhead and Trout for river. Salmon, Halibut, Bottom Fish and Dungeness Crab for ocean.

Thank you for using barbless hooks.

FISHING THIS WEEK: FAIR

WEATHER: Snow becoming mixed with rain this afternoon. Snowfall amount 5 to 10 cm except 15 cm near Stewart. High plus 2. Sunrise 8:23 AM Sunset 5:13 PM. Today’s yearly average temperatures: Maximum 1 degrees. Minimum -2 degrees.

WEATHER REPORTS VIA TELEPHONE: Environment Canada taped messages constantly updated, giving current conditions and three-day forecasts. Terrace 250-635-4192 Kitimat 250-632-7864 Prince Rupert 250-627-1155 Smithers 250-847-1958.

SKEENA RIVER: The water is in good shape, low and clean but still frozen over in spots.

Walking around is getting a little easier as a lot of the snow has melted. The boat ramps are still difficult to access.

This is a Classified River year round and can be guided from March 15 through October 15 only. The Steelhead record is 32-pounds. To see a photo of this fish cast to: http://noelgyger.ca/records/Record003.jpg The angler is Dennis Therrien.

ZYMOETZ (COPPER) RIVER: The water is in poor shape today, with moderate to heavy ice flows and fishing for Steelhead is difficult. The upper section is closed to angling as of December 31 but the lower section below the first canyon will stay open for the winter Steelheaders to enjoy.

Fishing Report from: Ron Wakita of Reliable Guide and Charters

KITIMAT RIVER: I apologize for the lapse in Fishing Reports for the Kitimat area but there has not been a lot to report. I have also been very busy coaching my son, Corey's hockey. Such is life in the Northwest.

We are having a very severe winter season. In fact as I write this report there is a deer walking down the middle of our street. This is a common occurrence in the outskirts of town but I live in the middle of Kitimat's residential area. This is a sign that even the deer are struggling with this winter's conditions.

There have some ice fishing opportunities for the hard core anglers. Ariel Kuppers and Jesse Houston fought some rainbow trout in Onion Lake. Onion Lake is a small lake located right next to the highway midway between Kitimat and Terrace.

DOUGLAS CHANNEL: Tom Blake a local boater drove down to MK Bay Marina last weekend to check his boat. As he looked out at the harbour he watched a boat land two feeder chinook right in front of the marina. He came into our tackle store to buy some bait and went back out to the marina and took his boat out trolling. He also managed to land a Winter spring.

If anglers are willing to brave the elements and get out and do some fishing there are fish to be caught.

Dress warm and Tight Lines, Ron Wakita

Fishing Report from: Chad Black of Nicholas Dean Lodge

No, this fish has not been through photoshop! Randy Marshall hooked and landed this monster Chinook Salmon on the Skeena in mid July this year with the help of Nicholas Dean guide, Greg Buck. The fish was estimated to weigh 70 lbs. Nelson Furtado Photo
Hello Anglers,
For the die hard angler who likes to pursue his or her addiction, this winter has not been a good one. For most of December, a cold snap where temperatures reached lows of -25 C was commonplace, making skating and ice hockey a much better and more successful pursuit than river fishing. January snowstorms blanketed Terrace in several feet of snow on numerous occasions and even getting to the river has been a difficult proposition! This is not to say that ice fishing isn't an option - it is, and I've heard some good reports of Cutthroat being caught - but my personal preference would be for catching up on some much needed fly tying to fill the holes in my fly boxes, and dream of days to come where I can launch a long cast over favourite pools, and anticipate the excitement of the grab.
It's also a time for us to reflect back on the fishing we had in 2008, and look forward to the 2009 season. Actually, when sitting down to weigh through my options for a photo for this week's report, I had a difficult time trying to decide which one to choose, owing to the great photos taken by our clients and guides. However, I finally decided to use a photo of Randy Marshall's (of Randy's River Guiding) giant Chinook that he landed in mid July with one of our guides, Greg Buck, for the simple fact that it's a massive fish. At 70 lbs, it's the biggest Chinook I've ever seen, and the story of how this fish was caught only makes it that much more impressive.
Back in the early Summer last year, water conditions were prime on the Skeena from late June all through the month of July during the typical peak Chinook fishing period, and Greg and his son Josh took advantage of this by being on the water nearly everyday. On this particular day, they had been backtrolling on the Skeena River near Terrace with some success, and Randy Marshall decided to join them around mid day. Instead of making their usual backtrolling runs down the river, they decided to back bounce slowly down the river, targeting the deep pools of the Skeena where Chinook like to hold. Having tried back bouncing last year with Dustin, I can say with all honesty that it takes a bit of getting used to, and that my ability to detect strikes needs a little work. Essentially, you attach a heavy lead weight (or lead substitute) to your line via a three way swivel, along with a big chunk of roe and a fluorescent coloured cheater, and you lift and drop this rig off the bottom as the current pushes you downriver. Takes can be very light, so you have to be very attentive - sometimes the only thing you'll feel is your line going slack on the way down.
After starting to back bounce down a favourite run on the Skeena, Randy hooked into what felt like a large fish. Large Chinook have a tendency to test the limits of even heavy action rods and level wind reels, and this fish was no exception. After several large head shakes, the fish sounded and peeled off line as it used the flow of the Skeena to its advantage. To give them the best chance of landing this fish, Greg expertly maneuvered the boat downriver, following the fish, until he was able to find a good location on shore to get out. Once there, Randy was able to apply enough pressure to tire the fish and work him into the shallows. With what I'm sure was a triumphant moment, Greg netted the fish in one scoop before the fish had a chance to head back to the middle of the river. Afterwards, Greg told me that the fish was so large it was difficult to fit in the net! As they set about taking a few photos of the fish prior to its release, they realized that they were even more fortunate to have landed this fish after inspecting the mouth. Apparently, a large, silver hook was still imbedded in its giant mouth, likely a remnant of a Commercial Salmon fisherman's lines, and caught within the eye of this hook, was Randy's 4/0 Gamakatsu! Now, when you sit down and think of the odds of catching a fish this size, this feat almost defies logic. I mean, what are the chances that after a Chinook made a move for your bait, that you were able to catch the eye of another hook - and have this hook stay in place? I'm sure that Greg, Randy, and Nelson Furtado (the photographer) will not forget this fish anytime soon...
On the heels of a great Chinook season in 2008, we expect the 2009 season to be a fantastic one as well. Whether you prefer to back troll down the mighty Skeena (or back bounce!), or casting spoons on the Kitimat, you can be sure that some of the largest Chinook in the world will be ascending our rivers. Of course, if you're a fly angler looking to hook into these great game fish on the fly, we do have several options for you as well, including fishing on a remote, intimate wilderness river that holds fish up to 70 lbs. To find out more about our Trophy Chinook and Fly Fishing packages, as well as many others, just contact Noel. He will be happy to answer all of your questions. Spots in June and July for the BIG Chinook are filling in quickly so please remember to book early.
Until next week, tight lines and screaming reels...
Chad Black, Operations Manager.

Noel Gyger - WEEKLY FISHING REPORT dated December 21 – December 28, 2008
(Number 103)

Dear Fishing Friends:

SUMMARY: Happy New Year everyone! The extreme cold weather has gone away but it is still very cold and we have had a good dump of snow. The “determined” fishermen are still getting out there. Some would say they’re “crazy”! The Zymoetz (Copper) River closes to angling above the sign at the transmission line crossing (below Zymoetz Canyon) at the end of the month (January 1 to June 15). So get out and enjoy before the closure. To be clear just the upper reaches of the river are closed one still may angle on the very low end, just make sure you fish below the boundary at the first canyon. The Kalum River is open to angling all winter although access to some pools is difficult as to the extreme low water and snow. The Kitimat River is open all winter also and if we get some warmer weather fishing for Trout should be OK.

Hello Noel,
I've been meaning to send this to you for over a month, hear is one of the largest if not the largest beautiful Steelhead I've ever landed. It saved the trip for me due to the fact that the first five or six fish I hooked throughout the trip either became unbuttoned or my line broke trying to us a ferruled leader. Without my fishing buddies Mike & Brad along that day this might have become a distant memory of what might have been. Fish like this will keep me coming back until my knees won't hold me stable in that glorious natal waters of the greatest fish that swims. Take care Noel and I wish you and yours a Merry Christmas and a Happy Birthday to you my friend with many more to follow. .
Your friend Bill Johnson

CURRENT REPORT and summary for Northern Coastal Rivers:

Fishing Report from: Ron Wakita of Reliable Guide and Charters

KITIMAT RIVER: We have received some clear sunny days with blue skies this week. Jody Dennill, a long time Kitimat resident, had a couple of really good days of trout fishing during the good weather. Jody was using both worms and roe.

Fly fishing has also been productive as trout have migrated into most of the tributaries and creeks of the Kitimat system. Hirsh and Humphry's creek have been the most productive. Egg and minnow patterns continue to be the more productive fly patterns.

DOUGLAS CHANNEL: There have been a few boats fishing the Kitimat Harbour this week but we did not receive any reports of any fish caught. We did hear that crabbing was very good and 'all the shells were very full', said Alain.

This weekend is forecasting calm waters and blue skies so hopefully more boaters will get out and find the winter springs. Good luck to all. Ron Wakita

Early Winter Steelhead PARADISE

The photo of the week shows the results of some hard work. More often than not, anglers willing to go the extra distance and hike through challenging terrain find the best fishing. Nicholas Dean Lodge manager and head guide, Dustin Kovacvich, knows many of the best pools on remote rivers, and client Jake Bippart was able to reap the rewards. This was Jake’s biggest Steelhead ever – certainly a great way to finish off a week of fishing!

Noel Gyger - WEEKLY FISHING REPORT dated November 23 – November 30, 2008

Dear Fishing Friends:

SUMMARY: The weather has been fair most of the week but got a little ugly on the weekend. One thing is for sure winter is on its way. Many of us who like to use our boats are trying to get out as much as possible as we know we will have to put them away soon. The two main rivers we fish now are the Kalum and Zymoetz (Copper) Rivers. Both these rivers have good runs of Steelhead in them. There are rivers north of us with good runs of Steelhead also. I am referring to the Cranberry, Meziadin and Bell Irving Rivers. Trout fishing on the Kitimat River is very good right now. Check out the Ron Wakita report below.

CURRENT REPORT and summary for Northern Coastal Rivers:

Fishing Report from: Ron Wakita of Reliable Guide and Charters

KITIMAT RIVER: With some milder weather this week the Kitimat River continues to produce good numbers of trout Cutthroat are typically the species of trout that are normally caught on the Kitimat this time of year but we are also receiving reports of Dolly Varden and the odd Rainbow trout caught as well. Worms continue to be the most dominant bait used to catch these trout but salmon roe has also been effective. I spoke to one fly fisher in our tackle store who landed six Cutthroat and one Dolly on Wednesday. He was using an Egg pattern and a Silver Minnow with a 4wt rod and said, 'he had a ball!'

The Kitimat Hatchery brood collection team also reports good numbers collecting brood stock. We are indeed fortunate to have the Kitimat Hatchery enhancing the Kitimat River. As is the case with most government facilities, the Kitimat Hatchery is now being scrutinized for budget cuts. Hatchery staff presented their budget numbers at the Kitimat Sports Fishing Advisory meeting this week. Their operating budget has been cut from $450,000.00 in 1990 to 230,000.00 in 2008. I was alarmed to hear of such drastic cuts to the Kitimat Hatchery's operating budget and even more appreciative of the job the Hatchery staff has been doing despite these huge reductions in funding.

I believe it is now time when government officials need to hear from the Sport Fishing Community how important this Hatchery is to maintain a sustainable fishery in our area. This fishery also contributes to social and economic development in our region and indeed our way of life. Stay tuned to this report for further updates.

DOUGLAS CHANNEL: Not much to report this week which is typical as Angler effort is minimal this time of year. I spoke to Ray Hepting who I consider to be one of the finest saltwater anglers and also one of the most knowledgeable authorities on fishing the Douglas Channel especially Winter Springs. He has retired from a successful Charter business and is able to fish purely for the love of the sport. Ray had little to report and when 'Ray speaks people listen'. It is possible that the run is late. Stay Tuned.

Tight Lines.

Fishing Report from: Westcoast Fishing Adventures

Gill hasn’t been able to get out fishing as much as he would like to. He is busy getting ready for next season. Maybe Gill and I can get out before the big snowfall comes. In the meantime he continues to send me some nice pics. I have included one below:
Fishing Report from: Nicholas Dean Lodge

Hello, for anglers who can find even a few hours to spare, this would be time well spent on local rivers in the Skeena region. Currently, water conditions are prime, and fishing a deeply sunk wet fly or retrieving a spoon through secluded pockets is a great way to entice often aggressive Steelhead into taking. When fishing with Noel and Rob Vodola earlier in the week, we encountered several Steelhead in the 10 to 14 lb range, and one even had sea lice on it – indicating that there are some fresh fish around. With unusually warm temperatures this week, it’s made for pleasant fishing conditions, and we have certainly taken advantage of this!

And, if you’re thinking about a fishing trip next year, this is a great time to book with Noel. Because it’s still early in the season, some spaces in the very best weeks are still available. Whether it’s casting that home made Steelhead fly in anticipation through that boulder studded run, or feeling the headshakes of a trophy Chinook Salmon, we are able to offer a number of packages for the discerning fisherman. Contact Noel today to find out more…

Until next week, tight lines and screaming reels…

Noel Gyger - WEEKLY FISHING REPORT dated October 26 – November 2, 2008
(Number 95)

Dear Fishing Friends:

SUMMARY: Angling for all Salmon, in our rivers, is over for another year signified by the Coho closure on October 31. In general I think it was a good year. Steelhead is the only target fish now along with the smaller resident Cutthroat and Dolly Varden Char. Even with the rain we’ve had the rivers have stayed in shape and the fishing for Steelhead has been very good especially on the Kalum and Zymoetz (Copper) Rivers. The snow line is low and most of the rain has stayed in the mountains as snow. Please check out the Ron Wakita detailed report below.

New Video Clip:

Rob Vodola and I went fishing on the Kalum River on October 25, 2008. We hooked over 11 Steelhead and landed 8 in high water conditions (no bank to fish from). Cast here for a direct link to the Video Clip 0056 Rob Vodola - High Water Steelheading New Oct 27/08

CURRENT REPORT and summary for Northern Coastal Rivers:

Fishing Report from: Ron Wakita of Reliable Guide and Charters

KITIMAT RIVER: Retention for Coho salmon on the Kitimat River closed Oct 31st which officially brings salmon fishing on the Kitimat River for 2008 to an end. Trout fishing on the Kitimat River will continue through the winter and into the spring depending on the weather but salmon fishing is now done.

The Kitimat Hatchery brood collection crew will be collecting their brood stock to continue enhancing the Coho on the Kitimat River. Stock assessments will also be in progress to determine the size of this year's Coho return. It will be interesting to review the results of the numbers of Coho that made it to the spawning beds.

We are so fortunate to have the Kitimat Hatchery on the Kitimat River. The Kitimat Hatchery enhances Cutthroat trout, Steelhead, Chinook, Chum and Coho stocks on the Kitimat River. The management and staff of the Kitimat Hatchery should be recognized for the amazing job that they have done.

DOUGLAS CHANNEL: A few boaters ventured out to doing a little crabbing and to check if the winter springs were in the Kitimat Harbour. No winter springs were reported this week but as one boater noted 'Remembrance Day is the day were I always start to do well for winter springs'. We will soon see if his theory proves to be true. Stay tuned. Tight Lines. Ron Wakita

Fishing Report from: Westcoast Fishing Adventures

Hey Noel thought you might want to show this one off as it was a world
record fish that is recorded in the IGFA book in 2004!!

I did not push this fish out as it was just too heavy!!

The measurements were 41 and a half length and 21 and a half girth!!

Landed by Andrew Fairclough of England on an 8 weight T&T fly rod on 12lb test. This was his second ever steelhead on the fly his first was landed just minutes before a junior of just 15- pounds and he was happy with that until Moby came along ! Thanks. Gill

This fish was weighed with an official IGFA scale and it weighed 34-pounds.

Hey Noel & Gill, Great trip, incredible experience. Here’s how it went down:

“It was a dark and stormy day, the rivers were angry my friend. As I plodded towards the river’s edge I saw the beastie poke its head above the water and give me a long, tough stare. Intimidated I was, perhaps even scared, but not a coward. The water slowly crept higher as I waded deeper into the raging current. Finally I settled in water about mid thigh height. Cast after cast, fly after fly. The beast was winning this battle of patience.

And then it happened…

A big slow roll on a twitching leech pattern as it swung across the run. The line tightened and the #7 weight creaked and moaned under the increasing pressure of the big fish. What ensued will only ever be known by the river, the fish, and me (and Gill, my father, and my brother). I can tell you it brought me to the highest elation, only to drop me back down to the lowest valley, minute after minute. The dual lasted days, a test of wills. Muscles burned, profanities flew, teeth grinded. And then it was over. The big beast came to rest in the net and I collapsed on the river bank.

When I came to, the sun was out. I slowly got my bearings and yet the beast was still there. He allowed me a few brief pictures before he continued back on his epic journey to create more gigantic offspring. I see now that fishing northern BC for Steelhead in the Skeena/Nass systems cannot be described, it can only be experienced.”

Angler: Nick Johnson
Master Guide: Gill McKean of Westcoast Fishing Adventures (who put me on 2x20lb Steelhead that day on the fly and about 10 Steelhead the day before)
Moral Support: Mike Johnson and Tim Johnson
Steelhead Size: 27lbs
Pattern: Purple egg sucking Leech
Date: October 17th, 1:23pm
Battle Time: 36 minutes

So there you have it. It may not be exactly how it happened but I prefer to remember it that way. Feel free to take/leave what you want. Take care, Nick Johnson

The following is an “important” conservation message from my friend Jeff Bright:

Steelhead Anglers,

A quick — and tasty — Skeena steelhead conservation opportunity that I believe is deserving of your attention:

Attached are an information sheet and an order form for SkeenaWild Certified Smoked Salmon. SkeenaWild Certified is a pilot project combining efforts of SkeenaWild Salmon Inc., Gitxsan band fishers and the North Coast Steelhead Alliance. The project goal is to create a market for high-quality, high-value SELECTIVELY harvested sockeye salmon.

How does this benefit Skeena steelhead? Unlike the gillnet fishery at the mouth of the Skeena, a smaller-scale selective net fishery gives by-catch steelhead much, much greater odds being released alive. Comparatively, the impact to steelhead stocks is negligible.

I fully support this change in thinking about how sockeye are harvested in the Skeena. And I can vouch for the quality of the product; my first order arrived this past week and it is delicious. I urge you to place an order and help create demand for SkeenaWild Certified, selectively harvested sockeye. According to the project flyer, all proceeds are re-invested in Skeena wild salmon conservation.

Bon appetit & good fishing! Jeff Bright www.jeffbright.com

Noel Gyger - WEEKLY FISHING REPORT dated October 12 – October 19, 2008
(Number 93)

Dear Fishing Friends:

SUMMARY: The weather has been about normal all week for this time of year. When it did rain most of it stayed in the mountain tops as snow. Just about all of the rivers are in good fishable shape for both Steelhead and Coho. We had a good bump of high water at the beginning of the week and this brought in some fresh Coho and Steelhead. The big Skeena River is a bit slow for “summer-run” Steelhead as most of the runs are now into their home tributary rivers. The fall and winter runs are still coming in. Coho fishing on the main stem remains pretty good at times. The Kalum is consistent for Steelhead fishing. Coho fishing is average so far for this year. The big northerns are coming in now. The Kalum River closed to guiding on October 15. The Kasiks and Exchamsiks and Exstew are fishing fair for Coho. The Zymoetz (Copper) River has been fishing well. The Kitimat River Coho fishing is peaking. Many of the fish in all of the rivers are in their spawning colours now. Coho closes to angling on October 31. Please check out the Ron Wakita detailed report below.

Randy Marshall had a good scrap on his hands with this wild Steelhead on the Kalum River on October 17, 2008. Cast here for a direct link to the Video Clip 0055 Randy Marshall - Tail Walking Steelhead New Oct 17/08. See below re Kalum River for a little more detail about our day.

KITIMAT RIVER:

SKEENA RIVER: is normal height and in good shape. The water has been steadily dropping since Tuesday. Fishing for Steelhead remains only “fair” as most of the summer-run fish have already gone through. The fall Steelhead will be coming next with most of them heading for the Kalum River. Coho fishing can still be very good in the lower river. The big Northerns are coming in now. Coho fishing up river will be slower as most of the fish are already in their tributary rivers.

KALUM RIVER: The water is normal height and in good shape. Good numbers of Steelhead and Coho (Silver) Salmon are coming in now. The larger fish are coming in now. We locals call these fish “Northerns”. A Coho weighing over 20-pounds is not uncommon. Fishing for Coho closes October 31.

I fished with Randy Marshall of Randy’s River Guiding on October 17th. We landed five Steelhead and four Coho (Silver) Salmon. Randy landed four Steelhead and I landed only one. I didn’t land any Coho. I didn’t fish too hard but there is no way in this world that I could ever out-fish Randy no matter how hard I tried. He is not only a good friend and an extraordinary fishing guide he is one of the best fisherman I have ever known. Book his guiding services and judge for yourself.

This is a Classified River year round and can be guided from March 15 through October 15 only. The Steelhead record is 32-pounds. To see a photo of this fish cast to: http://noelgyger.ca/records/Record003.jpg The angler is Dennis Therrien.

KASIKS RIVER: Lots of Coho are in now although it is difficult to judge the size of the run. Most of the fish are high up in the system now. Water heights have been good just about all week.

EXCHAMSIKS RIVER: Lots of Coho are in now but most are a long way up river. They like to gather in the big pools higher up and finding those pools takes a lot of work and a lot of running around in a jet boat. Sometimes, depending on how much rain we get, they move even higher up river to where jet boats cannot go.

EXSTEW RIVER: The water is normal height but a little clouded up at times. Sometimes this is a big advantage as the Coho do not spook when the water is this way.

ZYMOETZ (COPPER) RIVER: When the water is in shape lots of Steelhead are being caught with both the fly and spin rod.

KINCOLITH RIVER: Coho should be coming in on high tides and should be dispersed throughout the whole river. With each high water the fish move further up the river.

ISHKHEENICKH RIVER: This is a fantastic river for Coho this time of year. The water needs to be rising and falling to keep the fish moving up river.

MEZIADIN RIVER: Both Steelhead and Coho can be hooked on the same day plus numerous local trout and Dolly Varden char. To clarify: Fishing for Steelhead and Salmon are only allowed at the very low end of the river below the boundary sign (you are actually fishing the clean seam of the Meziadin River in the Nass River). Trout fishing is available throughout the whole river and lake. Please check the fishing regulations.

The fall colours in the Nass and trib region are absolutely beautiful this time of year. Cast to http://www.noelgyger.ca/for-sale-videos-dvd-photos.htm view some of the scenic photos.

In addition to scenic photos cast to http://www.noelgyger.ca/video-clips-web.htm to watch a few video clips from the beautiful Nass River system.

CRANBERRY RIVER: Both Steelhead and Coho can be hooked on the same day. Access to this river is not very good.

ECSTALL RIVER: Coho should be coming in now with the higher tides.

AREA RIVER RECORDS: Chinook Salmon: Skeena River, 92.5-pounds; Kalum River, 85-pounds; Kitimat River, 74-pounds; Steelhead: Skeena River, 45-pounds; Coho Salmon: Skeena River, 27-pounds.

CURRENT REPORT and summary for Northern Coastal Rivers:

Fishing Report from: Ron Wakita of Reliable Guide and Charters

KITIMAT RIVER: We have reached the last stages of our Coho season and the majority of the Kitimat Coho are now in their spawning colours. We have received reports of a few brighter Coho so it is still possible to catch some silver fish. The upper stretch of the Kitimat River from the 18 mile bridge to Sawmill seems to have the largest numbers of Coho 'stacked up'. The 18 mile rock, the Air Park and the upper Sawmill have been the better holes to fish this past week.

We have also received reports of a bunch of trout in the Powerlines hole. The Kitimat River has pretty good stocks of Dolly Varden Char and Hatchery enhanced stocks of Sea Run Cutthroat trout. Trout fishing on the Kitimat River will continue from now until spring only limited by river and weather conditions.

DOUGLAS CHANNEL: During every trip to the marina I notice more and more empty slips. The boats that are left are usually anglers who plan to fish through the winter.

We have received reports of winter Springs further down the Douglas but have not heard of any in the Kitimat Harbour yet. It is a great fishery when the fish are in but it is one of most difficult fisheries to predict timing. It just happens when it happens. The winter Chinook are following feed and when the feed arrives in the harbour so will the feeder Chinook. When the Chinook are in it can be a very exciting fishery. Stay tuned. Tight Lines. Ron Wakita

October 17, 2008 Skeena Steelhead Report

With our season winding down and the chance of snow predicted we are tying up the loose ends and putting the boats in storage for next season. We had an excellent October season on Upper Kalum which produced some chrome Steelhead and Coho, as well fish in the 20lb range. Attached are pics of our guests with some of the many Steelhead we landed on the fly.
Bookings for 2009 Salmon and Steelhead are coming in each day so we look forward to our repeat Steelheaders in the spring as well new guests for the 09 fishery. Tracey John Hittel, Kitimat BC Canada
Fishing Report from: Westcoast Fishing Adventures

Hey Noel just returned from up north! The fishing was better than I have ever had it. We landed a couple 20-pound “plus” Steelhead and averaged seven to eight Steelhead per day as well as Rainbow Trout and the odd Coho it was a real Westcoast Fishing Adventure. We fished on three separate water sheds in five days. I think I heard the one guest complain of a sore arm from catching too many fish. This is not a fish tale it really happened!

We are not just a one river show. I like to show my guests our beautiful country. Variety is the “spice of life” and catching 20-pound Steelhead is the “icing on the cake”!

Also fished the Skeena tribs for a few days and got the boys in some Northern Coho on the fly.

PARTNERS IN CHANGE SkeenaWild Conservation Trust has been working on a certification mark program designed to encourage selective commercial fisheries in the watershed, which release unharmed steelhead and non-target salmon such as chinook and coho. By purchasing SkeenaWild Salmon's selectively harvested Skeena River sockeye you are partnering with Gitxsan and the North Coast Steelhead Alliance to help transform the Skeena River salmon fishery. Order your SkeenaWild Certified hot-smoked sockeye fillets NOW! They will ship directly to your home.

The photo of the week shows Rob Vodola posing Henry Waszczuk’s Coho. I was fishing with my friends Henry Waszczuk, his wife Mary and Rob Vodola on the Kalum River on September 29th. We were targeting Coho and we found them. It's been about 15 years since I have fished with Henry. We have done many professional TV fishing shows together in the past and it was an honour to fish with him again. I shot a couple of video clips (details below). Check out Henry's websites www.fishingtheflats.com and www.gofinsandskins.com Rob and I would like to thank Dustin Kovacvich of Nicholas Dean Lodge for letting us use two classified rod-day licenses for Henry and Mary.

“What a treat to come back and fish northern BC, see some good old friends like Noel and Rob. And what can I say about Dr Howard Mills and his wife Ruth at Minette Bay Lodge – no question, amazing gem of the Kitimat/Terrace region. Unbelievable service, accommodations and food were all second to none; great guiding service and relations in the fishing industry as well. This fantastic operation will definitely be in my new book, Canada’s Top 100 Fishing Lodges.” – Henry Waszczuk

Dear Fishing Friends:

SUMMARY: Weather has been good during the week and the river heights are normal plus in good fishable shape. Near perfect I would say. And the fall colours are absolutely beautiful.
The big Skeena River is a bit slow for Steelhead and Coho as most of the runs are now into their home tributary rivers. The Kalum is consistent for Steelhead fishing with some guided guests hooking and landing two Steelhead per day on the fly rod. Spin guys have been doing a little better. Coho fishing is average so far for this year. The big northerns should be coming in now. The Kasiks and Exchamsiks are about average for Coho fishing with 5 to 12 hook-ups on the fly rods. The Zymoetz (Copper) River is a little unpredictable as conditions seem to change from day to day, sometimes in shape, sometime not. When in shape the guided guests, on average, have been catching two Steelhead per day. The Kitimat River Coho fishing is peaking. Please check out the Ron Wakita detailed report below.

Note: It is always a good idea to check for “IN SEASON” changes to fishing regulations. http://www.pac.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/recfish/Freshwater/region6_e.htm

SKEENA RIVER: is normal height and in good shape. Fishing for Steelhead remains only “fair” as most of the summer-run fish have already gone through. The fall Steelhead will be coming next most of them heading for the Kalum River. Coho fishing is slow at times as most of the fish are already in their tributary rivers.

KALUM RIVER: The water is normal height and in good shape. Good numbers of Steelhead and Coho (Silver) Salmon are coming in now. Some Coho have already moved through the river and Mud Lake and are staging in the Kalum Lake waiting for higher water to head up into their tributary rivers. A good portion of the run will stay back and spawn in the main stem river. These tend to be the larger fish we locals call the “Northerns”. A Coho weighing over 20-pounds is not uncommon. Fishing for Coho closes October 31.

This is a Classified River year round and can be guided from March 15 through October 15 only. The Steelhead record is 32-pounds. To see a photo of this fish cast to: http://noelgyger.ca/records/Record003.jpg The angler is Dennis Therrien.

KASIKS RIVER: Lots of Coho are in now. Water heights have been good just about all week.

EXCHAMSIKS RIVER: Lots of Coho are in now.

I was fishing with Chad Black for a couple of hours yesterday and be both managed to hook a Steelhead. Chad lost his and I landed mine. We may have had a couple of more bites.

AREA RIVER RECORDS: Chinook Salmon: Skeena River, 92.5-pounds; Kalum River, 85-pounds; Kitimat River, 74-pounds; Steelhead: Skeena River, 45-pounds; Coho Salmon: Skeena River, 27-pounds.

CURRENT REPORT and summary for Northern Coastal Rivers:

Fishing Report from: Ron Wakita of Reliable Guide and Charters

KITIMAT RIVER: With the signs of Autumn and the leaves on the trees changing colours as are the Coho in the Kitimat changing to their spawning colours. Although there are still some fresh Coho migrating into the Kitimat River more are colored than bright. Even some of the fish that have sea lice on them have a hint of red. Some connoisseurs of smoking salmon prefer salmon that are a bit turned in colour as they say that the turned fish have less fat and they are better to smoke.

The weather and river conditions for the majority of the week have been excellent and the Coho are stacked in specific holes. Two anglers were in our tackle store on Thursday reported landing seven Coho. They said, 'between Sawmill and Powerlines'. In the Tackle business you must learn to respect the angler's wish for privacy of their fishing holes but appreciate the catch results that that they do share.

There have been reports of some nice Trout being caught. The majority of the Trout that have been caught are Dolly Varden and Sea Run Cutthroat Trout. Small spinners and bait have been the tackle of choice this week. The weather has been great and the good fishing has been a bonus commented one angler.

DOUGLAS CHANNEL: The weather mid week has been exceptional and the Douglas Channel has been sunny and flat calm. The scenery on the Douglas can be breathtaking on these clear, sunny fall days. The trees are in their autumn colours and some of the mountains are white tipped with early snow. It is sure nice to take a moment to marvel at the beauty of nature. John from Blue Heron Charters reports that ``Winter Springs have arrived in Sue Channel. During a charter on Saturday we picked up a few along with some Crab and a 60 pound Halibut. It was an excellent trip. Congratulations to John and his clients.
.
The Douglas Channel offers plenty of good fishing through the fall months. Bottom fishing and Crabbing are always options and as are Winter Springs as John and his clients enjoyed last weekend. There are also charters available throughout the winter months. Any interested parties please contact Noel noel@noelgyger.ca
