We had a lot of rain for a couple of days this last week. On Wednesday, I recorded 12 inches of rain between 5:00 in the afternoon to 7:00 the next morning. This pushed a lot of weeds, trees, and debris out of the rivers, and it also pushed the blue water out to at least the 20 mile mark.
Most of the captains are reporting averaging between 1 and 2 sailfish a day per boat. And all of them are complaining that the weed lines are in such abundance, it is making trolling difficult. A trolled bait, with three feet of weeds trailing behind it, will not catch any fish.
However, a lot of the captains are also reporting several schools of peanut sized dorado among the weeds. Hopefully these fast growing fish will stick around for a while.
The inshore fishing was great early in the week. Santiago, on the panga, Gitana, did get 7 roosters, up to 40 pounds, in one day for his clients. And Adolpho, on the panga, Dos Hermanos, spent several days with an ESPN2 TV crew in Puerto Vicente Gro. They got a bunch of roosters and plenty of footage for their show.

A little bit of rough seas and some wind caused some difficult fishing conditions last week. Mr. Mark Tamim fishing aboard the Dos Hermanos 1 caught several nice Roosterfish as well as many more Yellow Tail Jacks. At one point it seemed like the Jacks outnumbered the Roosterfish 100 to 1. Mr. Harpster also fishing aboard the Dos Hermanos 1 lost 4 Roosterfish in one day and managed to land several large Jacks as well. Mr. Johnson fishing a short day on the Bloody Hook tied into a double header Marlin landing a 280 lb Black and loosing an estimated 200 Lb Blue. There continues to be an absence of SAILFISH as the fleet continues to hook and land more Marlin than Sailfish which is very unusual for this time of year. The Inshore fishing continues to lead the way when the seas permits and we still have some excellent open dates for August. Interested anglers are encouraged to contact us for availability

The fishing has slowed a bit this week. We have had some unsettled weather, with the barometer bouncing around like a yoyo. We only had one day of rain (Thursday), but we got over two inches between 8AM and 10AM.
The fleet is averaging only 1 or 2 sailfish a day average. However, the 10 to 15 pound yellowfin are between 15 and 20 miles off the beach and are providing very good action for the light line angler.
The clear and clean water is just two miles off the beach, and the inshore action is doing well. The roosterfish action is good, and there are lots of mid-sized jack crevalle between 12 and 16 pounds. The jacks are giving the fly rodders a great day on the water.

The inshore continues to dominate the fishing in Ixtapa Zihuatanejo. Mr. Monetero fishing two days inshore with Captain Adolofo landed 5 ROOSTERFISH and close to triple digit Yellowtail Jacks. Most of the Jacks were take on a MEGABAIT spoon and the Roosters on a combination of Live Bait and Pencil poppers. Mr. Mark Tamim also fishing two inshore days with Captain Adolofo recorded 7 ROOSTERFISH 4 of which scaled between 50 and 60 lbs. Mr. Tamim also had non stop action on Yellowtail Jacks landing nearly 50 in the two days. Mr. Betancourt fishing one day inshore aboard the Dos Hermanos 1 landed 1 ROOSTERFISH which scaled close to the 70 lb mark and lost another 4 Roosterfish. Mr. Betancourt fished one day offshore landing 1 SAILFISH and two Yellowfin tuna to 20 lbs. First Time visitor to Ixtapa Zihuatanejo. Mr. Nowacki fishing 1 inshore day aboard the Sequestro with Captain Temo landed 6 YELLOWTAIL JACKS as well as a handful of Bonitos on light tackle. The blue water is at the 15 mile mark but there has been a lack of activity. Inshore the red tide is gone and the fishing is wide open.

Clean clear water is at the solitary rock at the entrance to Zihuatanejo Bay. Fishing is improving, with the trend on the plus side as we move away from the full moon phase. Even though there are not many boats going out, the fleet is averaging about 3 sailfish a day, per boat. Adan, on the panga, Gitana II, fished only one day this week, but managed 4 sailfish released.
Most of the sailfish have been taken between 12 and 14 miles from the bay entrance. The blue marlin and yellowfin tuna are still around, but they are still out at the 1,000 fathom line (about 30 to 32 miles).
Santiago, on the panga, Gitana, told me he released two nice roosters this week weighing approximately 42 to 45 pounds, but most roosters are averaging about 25 to 30 pounds. He also said there are a lot of the hard fighting jack crevalle filling in the gap between the rooster bites and are averaging 14 to 16 pounds.

Inside the 1,000 fathom line (which is 30 miles from Zihuatanejo Bay), the water temperature is a minimum of 88º, with some areas as warm as 90º. Beyond the 1,000 fathom line the water is a more reasonable 86º. The action is good for most species, but it has moved out a bit.
We are averaging about 2 sailfish per day per boat with most of the action in the 12 to 14 mile areas. The marlin are still striking lures beyond the 30 mile mark. Plus there are quite a few yellowfin tuna at 30 miles also.
Inshore, Adolpho, on the panga Dos Hermanos, is still doing very well on roosters and jack crevalle up in the Troncones area

The season of unpredictability continues as the reports continue to defy the historical patterns. Offshore the Sailfish are almost nonexistent but the Marlin have showed up and continue to offer a real shot each day. Added to the mix was the oncoming full moon which made for a dicey mix. Inshore specialist and returning angler from New Jersey Ron Reinhardt and first time angler to Zihuatanejo Mr. Jamie Lobue fishing 4 days with Captain Adolofo raised over 20 ROOSTERFISH hooking 7 and landing 4. Two of the Roosterfish exceeded 70 lbs and were caught on YOZURI surface cruisers. The Duo also landed 27 YELLOWTAIL JACKS to 25 lbs. .Captain Adolofo finished the week fishing with Angler Mr. Montero who in 2 days landed 4 ROOSTERFISH to 55 lbs and 18 YELLOWTAIL JACKS. Captain Cheva on the Dos Hermanos 2 fishing 7 days with European angler Mr. Chanel hooked and lost 2 Big Marlin as well as 3 SAILFISH. Mr. Chanel did manage to land 7 ROOSTERFISH mostly on live bait along with over 60 Bonitos on lights tackle and 5 Big YELLOWTAIL JACKS. Returning angler Mr. Dennis Collins and his group fishing 3 days with Captain Chiro on the Bloody Hook landed an estimated 450 Lb Black Marlin on their first day out. The group’s second day was uneventful as they searched beyond the 25 mile mark but came up empty. The third day was marked by a rough sea and high winds. On that day the group managed one Yellowfin Tuna and pulled the hooks on a SAILFISH. Captain Temo on the Secuestro fishing with Angler Mr. Pack landed 1 ROOSTERFISH, 8 YELLOWTAIL JACKS and several Bonitos. The Red tide has moved south and our captain are reporting better water to the north around Pantla. The Blue water is out at the 25 mile mark and the band of green water between shore and the blue water is holding large schools of Bonito and some Marlin.

The water is really warming up, and it may just be a bit too warm for most species. The coolest water we have right now is inshore, and it is right at 84º. The blue water is almost 87º.
There are a few sailfish being caught, yellowfin tuna and blue marlin. Almost all fish are being taken between 16 and 20 miles of the Zihuatanejo Bay entrance.
There are still a lot of jack crevalle up near the Troncones area, and are readily attacking surface poppers. Adolpho, on the panga Dos Hermanos, spent 4 days down at Puerto Vicente Gro. fishing for jacks and roosters. They were handicapped a bit because the red tide we had here a few weeks ago has moved south, but they still took a lot of jack crevalle, green jacks, and a few roosters. He told me the best action was on the last day because the red tide had moved on out and further south. All the fish were taken on surface poppers.

The effects of the red tide have begun to diminish. Although not completely gone, the red tide continues to affect the consistency of the fishing in the Ixtapa Zihautanejo area. In what has to be the strangest start to our summer season, our captains reported both good days and bad days for the week. Inshore captain Adolofo fishing 4 days with Angler Mr. Michalsky in Pouerto Vincentee Guerrero landing 29 Yellowtail jacks, 7 Roosterfish to 55 lbs as well as 1 African Pompano. The fish were caught on lures because the ability to get live bait was shut down because of the red tide. There were no big Eyes or Cocineros in the bay. Captain Adolofo reported raising more Roosterfish during the 4 days but they were reluctant to strike. Returning angler Mr. Larry Chandler fishing with Both Adolofo and Temo on the Secuestro landed a mixed bag of Bonitos and Jacks on the fly. His largest Jack on the fly pushed the scales to nearly 25 lbs. Several roosters came within casting distance but would not make the transfer to the fly. Offshore Captain Chiro on the Bloody hook reported raising several Sailfish but they were unwilling to bite. Several Marlin were reported this past week as well. Angler Mr. Mark Peterson fought a huge Yellowfin Tuna for nearly two hours before it parted company far too early. At week’s end the red had had reportedly move south to Acapulco however it is too early to say if it is gone for good.

The full moon hangover coupled with the waning effect of the red tide made for some difficult fishing early in the week., Conditions improved dramatically as the week cam to a close with the blue water moving to within 12 miles of the beach. Our captains reported seeing large schools of Anchovies and sardines around the rocks while just offshore big Numbers of BONITOS and Mackerel were present. Captain Temo of the Secuestro reported a triple header SAILFISH loosing 2 and landing one for Angler Mr. Ferrage in one day offshore and 15 Jacks and a handful of Bonitos on another inshore day. Captain Adolofo fishing 1 inshore day with returning angler Mark Peteson reported 42 Yellowtail jacks of which 6 were in the 20 lb class. Along with a 30 lb Horseeye Jack and a 25 Lb African Pompano and 6 large Chulas. Captain Jamie on the Vamonos 2 reported raising 9 SAILFISH today hooking and landing 4. Conditions are improving each day with only scattered ride tide being reported. The blue water band, at 12 - 18 miles offshore is holding Marlin, Sailfish and some Dorado and Tuna.
